Project “Towards More Effective International Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters”

Project results:

  • On 25–26 September 2019, a study visit was held involving Latvian judges and representatives from the Ministry of Justice of Croatia to the National Courts Administration (NCA) and the Trakai Division of the Vilnius District Court.
  • During the visit, the Latvian and Croatian representatives were introduced to the reforms of the Lithuanian court system and amendments to the Law on Courts of the Republic of Lithuania. Participants also had the opportunity to explore technological innovations implemented in the Lithuanian judiciary and visited the Judicial Exhibition located at the NCA.
  • The participants, together with Lithuanian judges and NCA representatives, engaged in a roundtable discussion, where they shared challenges and best practices in the field of judicial cooperation in criminal matters. They also explored more effective and consistent approaches to strengthening international cooperation.
  • It was noted that some of the main practical challenges relate to inefficient communication between institutions, lengthy procedural timelines, and ensuring effective translation services for participants in proceedings.

Funding: European Commission funds.
